Imperial Calendar – Year 430, Beginning of December

Chrono signed a document and put it on the pile of other signed documents. All these papers were permits for running a stall. And probably because of the lax inspection, the flow of applicants never ceased.

Going by the figures, it felt like the numbers were ever so slightly increasing, but Chrono could still sense a substantial change.

Having said that, he couldn’t afford to become too optimistic. The farmers and their produce were finite. The day when they’d reach their limit would definitely come sooner or later.

As such, he had to adopt counter measures before that.

Just as he was pondering about all this, he heard a knocking from the door. Not too loud, but not too faint. It had the perfect balances as far as knocks were concerned. And this clearly told Chrono that Alyssa was standing on the other side of the door.

“Enter!”

“Please excuse me.”

The door was quietly opened in response to Chrono’s invitation. Alyssa entered after bowing gracefully.

“Master, a letter has been delivered from the capital.”

“Bring it to me.”

“As you wish,” Alyssa elegantly walked up to his desk and placed the letter down.

Immediately following, she moved back to a place away from the desk for the time when Chrono would open the letter. Chrono smiled wryly at that, lowered his eyes on the letter, and stood up. Alyssa looked his way with a startled expression.

“Alyssa, call Mino…no, nevermind. I’ll go in person.”

“Very well, Master.”

She had probably guessed it from the tone of his voice. Alyssa swiftly bowed. Chrono put on his mantle and rushed out of his office. A bad premonition was gnawing at him. The emperor’s demise, and Tilia having collapsed from sickness――he felt like all of it was connected.

“But, don’t tell me…”

He barely managed to swallow, “for them to go to war with Holy Empire Argo…” Even if it would become public knowledge sooner or later anyway, Chrono suspected that he should keep quiet about it until he had a talk with Mino.

“Fuck,” cursed Chrono quietly under his breath.
