Chapter 24 – Equipment Update

I connected the Box Device given to me by Satoha through a cable with my smartphone. The LED on the device lit up, telling me that it had booted up without a hitch.

Around thirty masks in total were recorded on my storage list, but when I quickly checked their estimated value, most of them were tagged with a price of around two million Yen. It…doesn’t look like I stumbled on a heap of trash here.

Still, being able to obtain a huge amount of money so easily…just how much did I earn during the last clear? Furthermore, according to Satoha, this was the lowest price offered by the management. It’s also possible that I’ll be able to sell the masks for a lot more.

I went on to swap items into the Box Device while checking each and every item inside my smartphone. Apparently this device has several dozen times the capacity of my smartphone. It doesn’t seem like this item has been handed out to all players. Maybe they want most of the players to sell their items on the spot? Oh wait, they could also manifest the items and store them away normally after the dungeon run. But that comes with the danger of stuff being found or stolen.

As I sieved through the items, I kept an eye on things I might be able to use myself. Also, I sold off all those mask pieces, which wouldn’t fit a human face, to the management for the time being. 10,000 points were transferred to my smartphone.

I might have various expenses to cover, so it’d be best to liquidate some of those points into money. I mean, I’ve had enough of charging into dungeons while wearing casual clothes you can buy in a regular shopping mall.

And while pondering about all that, I kept looking for items that I can equip. Among all of them I spotted one item with a conspicuously high price. It’d bring me roughly 200 million Yen. 200 million, eh…?

Item: 『Visor of the Dragon』

Type: Armor

Effect: 『Casting Time Abolition』

Visor modeled after a dragon’s mouth part. It partially covers the face from below the eyes. The more you fight in battles while wearing this mask, the more your breathing techniques will be adjusted to fit combat.

Somehow I got a good feeling from reading the item description. I manifested the visor from my smartphone, holding it in my hand. This armor piece resembled a closed dragon mouth. Its design, a combination of Western and Oriental dragon mythologies, looked pretty cool. It’s not too tacky and the nose doesn’t stick out in a weird way either.

Because I didn’t know anything about what people call visors, I closed Dungeon Seekers and searched the Internet.

I suppose it’s an armor piece like the masks worn by samurai on the battlefield. The one with the mustache. It looks like many of those also come with throat protections, but the one I have doesn’t. It’s described as a visor, but you probably can’t label it like that, if you’re very precise.

You affix it to your face by using the fairly thin strings inside the visor. It does seem somewhat unreliable and it could hurt if you wear it for too long, or so I thought, but when I put it on, I didn’t feel an ounce of discomfort.

Just like Dragon Eater, it’s got its own effect. I guess this is yet another high-class item…even when trying to take it off, it doesn’t give the impression that you can easily remove the visor. And although it doesn’t have any obvious ventilation holes for your mouth, I feel like breathing becomes easier with this thing on.

Alright. I’m gonna use this one. And just as Satoha said, I’ll store away the remaining masks for now.

After having decided all that, I pulled the plug from the Box Device and put my smartphone away. Now that I got a face protector, I kinda feel like my general appearance…looks whacko. I’d love to get my hands on some sort of combat-oriented clothing. Rather than looking for defense power, I’d already be fine with outstanding functionality that covers my bare skin.

But, are they actually selling such combat outfits in modern Japan? It might be smart to ask Satoha about this, but…

At that moment, I came up with the perfect place to get combat equipment. I looked it up online and checked that the store would still be open until regular closing hours.

If I hurry, I can also use quite a bit of time to check on the things over there.

I quickly left my home and headed to Sendai Station.

A signboard with Survival Game Outfitter in big letters was currently in front of my eyes after a good walk away from Sendai Station. I had heard some bits about this store in the past, so I entered the store thinking that it might deal with something good for me. Several airguns hung on the walls inside the store. And a huge amount of hangers carried camouflaged clothes, which were said to be preferred by all the folks playing survival games. While casting a sidelong glance at those outfits, I called out to the clerk wearing a green apron.

“Ohh! I see! Man, so it’s your very first survival game!? How nice~ And that’s why you visited us today, right?”

“Yes. I thought it might also be fine to buy my gear online, but in the end you want to buy the things you’re going to wear yourself in a place where you can actually see and test them out, right?”

I talked to him sociably in a way that would never suggest that I was looking for an outfit to dive into a dungeon. But well, I guess I’m about the only guy who would come here with such an intention anyway.

“I totally get what you mean! So, it means you’re looking for a combat uniform.”

“Yes. I looked up quite a few things, but I don’t really understand…won’t those clothes be too stuffy or hard to move in? Also, how are they different from genuine combat uniforms?”

“Of course most of the items have a lower durability than the uniforms used by actual soldiers, but their functionality is outstanding. They have good ventilation and it’s easy to move around in them. You can enjoy your game comfortably while wearing those outfits,” the clerk explained while clearly excited about this. “Besides, they look cool!”

Certainly, that might be an important point. Satoha’s clothes look ordinary at a first glance, but they seemed fairly neat during battle.

The clerk picked up some pieces and showed them to me. When I saw the vents added to the clothes, I was stunned that they were using such smart features nowadays. I possess a defense measure with Barrier Coating, so clothes that allow for easy movement will do fine for me.

“Oh, dear customer, you also want to get tactical boots and knee protectors with this! Also, a waist pouch! Please wait for a moment!”

When the clerk asked me whether I possessed all the other equipment, I honestly denied that. At once he started to race around inside the store at a mind-boggling speed. Or to be precise, he seemed bouncy and cheerful since I had earlier told him my budget. This guy looked like he’d recommend only the best stuff.

I waited for the clerk to bring all his recommendations while looking around inside the store.

At the time for dinner, just as closing hours were drawing near, the clerk told me that he had fun and bid me farewell with a loud voice as I left the store. After returning a bow at that, I stepped outside with a paper bag in my right hand. I wondered whether I should grab something to eat in front of the station.

On the way there I entered a deserted back alley and stored the paper bag away. Dungeon Seekers is really way too convenient in many ways.

…I feel like I went along with the clerk’s sales pitch too much, resulting in me having bought a lot more than planned. In reality, I was damn scared when I saw the total sum displayed on the cash register.

What I bought were black, camouflaged clothes as they were used by special forces. Believing his words that they had an extremely good evaluation for being easy to move in, I bought them. Also, the black one was a lot cooler than the green one.

In addition, I got elbow and knee protectors, a waist pouch, and boots which are capable of withstanding bad weather conditions and give you a firm stand. Moreover, the clerk smiled bitterly at that, but I bought a holster-shaped holder for my smartphone. It’d make me worry heaps if my smartphone was being jolted about in my pocket during combat, so this should do the trick just fine.

All of this bloated the price quite a bit, but I had money from selling my items. Unmistakably, all of it was worth its money.

After arriving at Sendai Station, I searched for a suitable restaurant. Using the opportunity, I’ll also look for a dungeon around here.

With that decided, I activated the 『Seeker’s Camera』 on my smartphone.
