Chapter 5 – Going on a Drinking Spree among the Mountain Folk

Imperial Calendar, Year 260 – Moon of the Emerald (May)

With Luminas as my guide and guard, I visited a village of the mountain folk with some souvenirs at hand.

“Heyo, I’m Albert from the Warihara’s place. I’ve brought wine and meat from our chief.”

“Oh, Albert of the Warihara, eh? We’ve heard about you from Hakim. Still wine and meat, you say? This is a nice surprise. How about, are you going to drink with us as well?”

“I’d love to join in.”

That was the basic rundown on how I entered every clan’s village. It didn’t take long for the clans to become welcoming of us as we always brought souvenirs with us. I pretended to be a relative of Warihara’s clan chief, and gathered information while drinking with the clan members. This also allowed me to categorize the respective clans into ones who want to break away and ones that look like they will break away from Hero’s Sword.

While drinking together, I investigated the stance of each clan when it comes to Hero’s Sword. Some clan chiefs loudly proclaimed that they must defeat Elancia, a nest of willing evil god worshipers, as vanguard of Hero’s Sword while others expressed their regret by lamenting that they shouldn’t have converted to Hero’s Sword. In short, the mountain folk were very split on this issue.

There’s a saying that factions are born as long as there’s three humans. And just as these words suggest, I could confirm that the mountain folks, the strongest power in the mountains, had formed factions as well. They were largely divided into two camps: the old beastman clans who have been living, gathering and hunting in the mountains since ancient times, and the human clans who are cultivating land in hidden villages after having settled down in the mountains as runaway farmers.

Naturally these two camps had been divided from the start because of their differing way of thinking.

Although you may call them mountain folk, it’s not like they can produce gold, silver, and food out of nothing. Yet they possess the foundation to maintain their influence. They aren’t rich by any standard, but they earn enough to not starve and the funds for maintaining their power has been distributed to the clan chiefs depending on the scale of each clan.

Because the money was split equally, the divide between the old beastman clans and the new human clans wasn’t that big up until recently, but with the teachings of Hero’s Sword radically spreading among the newer clans, the money to uphold their power apparently started to flow to Hero’s Sword.

Once that happened, the money, which had been distributed to those newer clans, stopped being spent on maintaining the mountain folk’s influence. Logically, the older clans had to shoulder those additional costs, such as pay for the guards watching the territory, money to buy food and arms, and money to buy emergency rations in preparation of shortages. This inevitably deepened the divide between both camps which had originally existed.

Warid and Hakim, who decided to help with my plan, obstinately hid the internal affairs of the mountain folk from me because they likely didn’t want me to find out that the mountain folk, which was considered to be a monolith when it came to foreign matters, was fighting internally.

Now that I knew about this dispute, I’d obviously exploit that divide.

My impression while I drank with the different clans as a member of the Warihara clan was that the connections between the clans were rather weak. So far as it goes, the clan chiefs convene each season to decide the general policies of the mountain folk as a whole, but outside that forum, each clan is free to make their own decisions.

As a result of me having drinking bouts for a month, I’ve established which clans want to wait-and-see, support, and break away from Hero’s Sword. If you express the factions in numbers, you can say 10% are diehards, 50% are moderates, and 40% want to break away from Hero’s Sword.

The diehards are mostly clans consisting of humans who farm in areas close to Alexa. They didn’t give me the impression that they’d listen to our side of things. Therefore, I decided to start an impostor arson strategy, using the Goshoot clan to truncate the diehard clans and split the moderates.

Three days had passed since I finished my drinking tour to gather information. Standing on high ground allowing me to look down at my target, the village of a moderate clan, I was waiting for the news that the preparations were done.

“Albert-dono, everything is ready. Please give us the command to begin the operation,” Warid informed while disguised as an armed soldier of Hero’s Sword.

I had lowered my hood so that my face wouldn’t be visible either.

“Go ahead and begin.”

The youths of the Goshoot clan around me, all disguised as Hero’s Sword soldiers, lit the torches in their hands. As soon as the torches were burning, they surged towards the village in one big group.

“W-What’s your business with us!? Why are you all armed!?”

The villagers looked surprised after seeing us rushing towards their settlement.

“We have been ordered by Bleach Oxner, the representative of Hero’s Sword and the Hero of Prophecy, to burn down the village inhabited by traitors!” I told the villagers the reason while disguising my voice.

Of course, I was lying. Bleach Oxner and the higher ups of Hero’s Sword didn’t know anything about this arson attack.

“W-Why would you do something like this!? We have been devoted to the teachings of Hero’s Sword as believers.”

“We shan’t accept any protest. We only carry out the words of the Hero of Prophecy!”

I thrust away the villager who flared up at me, and ordered the disguised Goshoot clan to set the village on fire. Because I thoroughly told them in advance to set storehouses and fields on fire so as to not kill any people, no one was burning to death, despite flames brightly flickering all over the place.

“How cruel! Why would you do something like this!? Damn it!”

“Hero of Prophecy Bleach Oxner has said that traitors and heretics will never be tolerated. Regard this as a warning. If you want to demonstrate your loyalty to Hero’s Sword, pay donations for the Holy War at once.”

Warid and Luminas, who have been guarding my surroundings, thrust their swords at the villagers.

“Hii! Even donations! Didn’t you collect them just recently!? Something like money――”

I drew the sword at my waist and thrust it before the neck of the man who was making a racket.

“I will allow you to choose whether you’re a heretic or traitor. Though you’ll have to die afterwards, either way.”

“Hiii! I’ll pay! I’m a faithful believer! Please, forgive me!”

The man took off all of his valuable rings and tossed them into a leather bag held by an armed soldier.

“Very well. We will let you off this time. Is there anyone else wishing to become a heretic or traitor?”

I faced the gathered villagers, thrusting my swords in their direction. All of them shook their heads. They brought the valuables from their homes and threw them inside the leather bag.

When a certain amount of donations had been gathered, I signaled the Goshoot clan to stop setting the storehouses and fields on fire.

“Hmm, I’ll report that this village had no traitors or heretics. Make sure to devote your everything to Hero’s Sword from now on.”

I looked at the burning fields and storehouses, lightly tapped the shoulders of the villagers, who had flopped down on the ground while staring blankly at the tragedy, and then left the village with the soldiers in tow.

After walking away from the settlement for a while, I removed the hood covering my face once I made sure that no one was watching us.

“It was a huge success, wasn’t it? As far as I’m concerned, it hurts me to torment mountain folk like us, but this is something necessary to get rid of Hero’s Sword, correct?”

“Yeah. I have entrusted you guys with a bitter role, but please endure for now.”

“No problem. Us Goshoot members will always see a job to the end, once we’ve accepted it.”

“I see. It’s a big help for me to hear you say that.”

Luminas has been accompanying me as my guard for the last few weeks, but not only were her abilities as guard pretty high, but I found out that her skill as a spy wasn’t inferior in any way. Sneaking into enemy territory, gathering intelligence, and disguise; all of them made her a first-rate spy. If I could get her to join the Erwin family together with her father, I could form a powerful organization with Lichere as supervisor of the intelligence agency, Irena as the one in charge of finances, and Warid as well as Luminas as field unit.

Information matters the most when it comes to surviving turbulent times, so you never can have enough talented personnel.

“My daughter is an outstanding spy. I think she will be very useful for you, Albert-dono. Moreover, she’s still single.”

Oh, it looks like my recent actions have increased my reputation with Warid. I guess it raised the flag of him giving her to me as wife. Guessing from Malida’s reactions, it seems like she’d immediately give her OK to taking Luminas as a lover. If Warid and Luminas agree to that, I think I’ll sound Malida out about taking in Lumias after we complete the current operation.

“That sounds really nice. I shall take the liberty to consider Luminas’s matter seriously. But, right now the priority lies with making this operation succeed.”

“Yeah, I know. Next we’re going to attack another village of the moderates to take away their money and valuables, right?”

“Right. Please manage the money and valuables responsibly since I’ll have you give them back to each clan after you’ve become the representative of the mountain folk, Warid.”

“Roger. I’ll have my subordinates control the loot so that we know what we took from which village.”

The work of loading the money and valuables, which had been stuffed into a leather bag, on a wagon was advancing quickly ahead of me. The stolen money and valuables would be temporarily gathered at the village of the Goshoot clan.

“Okay, I leave the transport to you. Let’s attack the next village.”

“As you wish.”

“Roger.”

I clapped the shoulders of Warid and Luminas before we started moving to the next village on our target list.

We repeated this process for eight villages of the moderates. By disguising as armed soldiers of Hero’s Sword rumors that it had been the diehards, who stole their money and valuables while burning down their village, spread among the moderates.

Bleach and his high-ups panicked after grasping the situation. They frantically tried to get rid of the rumors by claiming that this was being done by impostors. But, now that the moderates were jumping at shadows, they didn’t believe any of it.

Why, you ask? That’s because Hero’s Sword has actually been doing the same to clans belonging to the breakaway mountain folks in order to tighten the internal unity of their organization.

The moderates felt angry about having the same done to them, which in turn deepened their association with the breakaway clans. The number of breakaway clans gradually increased and the rumors about that rapidly spread amidst the moderate clans, accelerating the switching of moderates to breakaways even further.

Who might have anticipated such sudden turn of events? Well, I did expect as much. Or rather, I’m the reason behind it.

After confirming the success of my impostor arson strategy, I moved on to the next step of the plan. While lying about my origin, I infiltrated the village of the diehard clan where Bleach Oxner was supposed to live.

Under normal circumstances, infiltrations behind enemy lines isn’t the job of a strategist, but this time I had decided to gain the loyalty of Warid’s Goshoot clan by taking the vanguard and showing them a strategy on how to thoroughly crush Hero’s Sword.

“Albert-dono, I never expected to accompany you into the enemy headquarters.”

“Shhh! Right now I’m Al, a wealthy believer who fled from Alexa.”

“Oops, forgive me. Still, their guard is quite lax. They seem to believe that enemy units would never infiltrate a place where people related to Hero’s Sword, believers who fled from Alexa, and a diehard clan have gathered.”

Armed soldiers of Hero’s Sword were patrolling the village while wearing equipment from Alexa’s royal army. The entire village is filled with a palpably tense atmosphere due to the number of people breaking away from Hero’s Sword increasing daily.

“Al-sama, we will have our turn very soon. Please get ready.”

Spurred by Luminas’s words, I focused my attention on the queue, where we were standing. It looked like we’d be able to enter the assembly hall, allowing us to have an audience with the Hero of Prophecy after ten more people.

Hero’s Sword forced its believers to donate and they apparently granted the permission to receive Bleach’s personal blessing, if you donated a lot of money.

After getting hold of that information, we infiltrated the village while disguising ourselves as rich believer and his retinue, offered a big amount of money, and were now waiting for our turn to receive a blessing.

“Next! Al-dono and party from Alexa. Enter.”

Since a soldier called my name, I proceeded into the assembly hall, followed by Warid who was dressed as butler, and Luminas who was dressed as maid. The interior of the hall was crowded with a huge number of armed soldiers. In their middle stood a luxurious, throne-like chair. A middle-aged, plump man in armor that shone golden sat in that chair.

“Believer Al, step forward,” Bleach beckoned me over while speaking with such a shrill voice that anyone hearing it would feel uncomfortable.

I stepped in front of him and used my power.

As might be expected of a swindler, his charm was rather high. But besides that, his abilities were average or below.

“I feel deeply honored to have the opportunity to take a look at your enlightened countenance, oh Hero of Prophecy.”

“Mmh, your valuable donation will definitely contribute to the realization of our Holy War. I firmly promise you that you will be guided to paradise after your death thanks to the blessing granted by me.”

Using the golden wine cup in his hand, her sprinkled wine on my head in the name of a blessing.

To be frank, I don’t have any interest in the afterworld whatsoever. I want to live a cheerful and happy life in this world, surrounded by my wife and her lovers.

Despite feeling pissed about the wine on my head, I restrained myself from showing it on my face.

“Alright, you will be fine with this.”

“Thank you very much! Now I will be able to safely travel to the afterworld, but as a matter of fact, I still have one worry weighing down on me… On the way here, I stumbled on a dead beastman who possessed this letter here.”

I took a crumpled piece of paper out of my pocket and held it out to Bleach. The letter was a request for clemency in exchange for capturing Bleach Oxner and handing him over to the breakaways. The sender was a diehard clan chief who had tenaciously tormented Warid’s Goshoot clan. That clan chief led a large clan which could also be described as an authority among the diehard clans.

After accepting and reading the letter, Bleach’s hands started to tremble. He immediately beckoned over a man, who looked like a higher-up, showed him the letter and started to whisper something to him.

Bleach-kun, your face makes it plain obvious that you’re quite cornered, you know? If you pull such an expression, you’ll end up making me convinced of my victory.

I couldn’t stop grinning in my mind, but on the surface I did my utmost to keep a straight face.

“Believer Al, we will have your matter of anxiety resolved in no time. Feel free to relax in this village from now on.”

“Thank you very much! It’s so wonderful that I can be of use for Hero’s Sword.”

I politely bowed my head and left the assembly venue. Once I stepped outside, the armed soldiers were busily moving around, unlike before. They surrounded the estate where the clan chief whom I set as sender was temporarily living.

“Why have I been arrested!? On suspicion of insurrection, you say? What are you talking about? Letter? I don’t know anything about something like that! Let go of me!”

A male human came out of the building, both his arms held by soldiers.

So that’s the diehard clan chief who became the scapegoat this time, huh? It’s my first time seeing him. He’s a person with a fairly craggy face. But oh well, unfortunately you chose wrong by siding with Hero’s Sword.

Don’t hate me for it, okay?

Bound by ropes, the man was dragged into the assembly hall by the soldiers. After a short time, a cream of death agony echoed throughout the village.

“Father, it’s a very bad idea to get on Al-sama’s bad side.”

“Yeah, you’re right. He grasps the situation through the information provided to him, freely manipulates even people who are far away, and his plans always produce results. I don’t want to even think about having such a person as an enemy. It’s obviously better to work for him.”

It sounds like Warid’s rating of me has drastically increased thanks to the success of the strategy. With such a positive attitude towards me, I think he’ll be able to work for me well as a retainer under my direct control.

“It’s not over yet, so make sure to stay on your guard. Also, please arrange for another three letters, which talk about betrayal for some reason, to be discovered one way or another.”

“Yes! We will get everything ready at once. Lumina, we’ll begin at once.”

“Y-Yes!”

Once I saw the two vanish inside the village, I headed to the house designated as an inn.

Afterwards, Warid and Luminas did great work in the village serving as headquarters of Hero’s Sword. Going by the talks among the diehard clan members, which we picked up during the intelligence gathering, completely unfounded rumors, filled with criticism towards Hero’s Sword, were circulated.

Those circulated rumors were going too far, but since the diehard members in the letters had an idea what it was about, they could only answer inconsistently. That ambiguous attitude convinced Bleach, who was completely caught in the circle of suspicions, that they were guilty, ending with him personally purging the diehards.

Within a few days, Hero’s Sword found itself in a strained atmosphere thanks to the false rumors spread by Warid and Lumina. Being informed that the doctrine of Hero’s Sword was utter nonsense, the fanatics flew into a rage. On the other hand, the organization’s upper echelon and Bleachner, who feared for their lives, suppressed them with force.

And thus the swindlers and fanatics cursed, hated and fought each other.

At this point 『Religious Fanaticism』 had stopped mattering with the situation having degraded into an ugly 『Power Struggle』 where everyone vied for survival.

『Hey, bastard! Ya said we could reincarnate into a nice life if we killed the believers of the evil god, didn’t ya!?』

『Who cares! You’re an idiot for believing such bullshit anyway!』

These sorts of quarrels occurred every day in the village of the diehards where Hero’s Sword was hiding out. Because of the political purge carried out by Bleach and the ensuing internal strife afterwards, one of the higher-ups of Hero’s Sword took around 400 supporting clan members with him and separated from Hero’s Sword.

After making sure with our own eyes that the false-rumor-strategy had succeeded, we withdrew from the village and returned to the clan chief of the Warihara.

“As you’ve heard just now, our plan succeeded and while the diehards and Hero’s Sword are fighting, we’d like you to unify the breakaways and the moderates, who have now distanced themselves from Hero’s Sword, under Warid,” I asked Hakim when he came to welcome us after we returned to the village of the Warihara clan.

“Unify under him… Are you telling us to stop managing the mountain folk through the council of clan chiefs?”

“That council system was powerless against a foreign, religious influence like Hero’s Sword, wasn’t it? Hero’s Sword quickly became popular without you realizing and you were on the verge of having your whole system taken apart, when you left all the decisions to the clan chiefs who only shared weak ties among each other.”

“That’s certainly true, but…rallying the clan chiefs under one banner will take a lot of effort…”

“You can use Warid to persuade them. We grasped the weaknesses of the clans during our little expedition.”

Standing next to me, Warid cast a grin at Hakim, “Thanks to accompanying Albert-dono, I got my hands on various information about the mountain folk clans. Everything will work out if you tell the clans, which aren’t willing to accept our proposal, that they’ll go down the same path as the diehards due to Albert-dono’s schemes.”

The story about the internal fight between the diehards and Hero’s Sword had apparently spread to all clans and also reached Hakim’s place. Hakim’s face quickly cramped up when he heard Warid’s remark.

“Warid, on which side do you stand? The mountain folk or Albert-dono’s?”

“I’m with Albert-dono because I think the mountain folk should be able to flourish under Albert-dono the most.”

“Are you suggesting we give up on our neutrality?”

Warid smirked at Hakim, “I’ll stick with Albert-dono, but you can lead the neutral mountain folk as usual. It’d be fine if you and I govern over the mountain folk as great clan chiefs with both of us sharing the leadership. I’ll be the highest authority when it comes to practical business while you’ll be the highest authority for all the formal stuff.”

“In other words, I will act as the public leader of the neutral mountain folk while you will lead the mountain folk behind the scenes while receiving assistance from the Erwin family?”

“Yeah, that’s the idea. Officially the mountain folk will remain a neutral power and at the same time they’ll be unofficially connected to the Erwin family. But, if the Erwin family does something that would hurt the mountain folk, I intend to separate from them and fight. Well, I don’t expect the Erwin family to do anything as foolish as that while Albert-dono is alive, though.”

Certainly, I’d never allow them to make such a foolish choice. Neighborhood friendship is important. I mean, I plan to have my children inherit the Alcor family, which shares a border with the mountain folk, and the Erwin family.

“Hakim, at the moment when the mountain folk failed to see the expansion of Hero’s Sword, we lost the ability to choose anything but to live together with the Erwin family or get crushed together with Hero’s Sword.”

“If Albert-dono had learned of the brittle foundation of the mountain folk and launched a similar plan against us, the mountain folk would have been split up, huh?”

Hakim sighed deeply, apparently having given up any further resistance.

“Got it. I’ll persuade the clan chiefs with the plan suggested by you, Warid. While telling them all about the scariness of opposing Albert-dono. So, please give me some time.”

Because I was asked by Hakim to be granted some time for persuasion, I estimated the time Hero’s Sword would need to fall apart due all the internal conflicts.

“You have two moons. Please persuade the mountain folk until the Moon of the Ruby and set up a structure where the mountain folk are led by the Goshoot and Warihara. If you do that, I’m sure the Erwin family will become a good neighbor of the mountain folk.”

“I understand. I will also borrow Warid for all the persuasion work. I need his assistance to talk about your amazingness, Albert-dono.”

“Got it. Warid, I leave it in your capable hands.”

“Please count on me. I’ll use all my capacities to make the mountain folk understand your ingenuity. Also, as sign of my vassalage, I will offer my daughter Luminas to the Erwin family as promised beforehand. Please use her as you see fit.”

Luminas knelt down with a serious expression and lowered her head in front of me.

“I am well aware that I still lack competence, but please use me for the sake of the Erwin family, Goshoot clan, the mountain folk, and yourself, Albert-sama.”

We finally got to this part. It took quite a while. I managed to gain the trust and loyalty of her father. At the same time, she has started to adore me. Afterwards I must take her to Castle Ashley, get my wife’s permission and properly introduce her to my wife’s lovers.

The last two months I’ve been staying in the territory of the mountain folk, so my sexual desires have been building up since I had to remain abstinent all the time. I’m sure the same might have happened to Malida and her lovers back at Castle Ashley as well. Thus you can expect things to become quite incredible.

But, I wonder whether Luminas will be able to endure… She should be okay since she’s been training her body, right?

I placed a hand on her shoulder and told her, “Please assist me from now on. I will be counting on you.”

“O-Okay! I will do my best for the rest of my life!”

I left the persuasion work to Warid and Hakim, returning to Castle Ashley together with Luminas.

The one welcoming me as I came back to Castle Ashley several days later was Malida.

“Albert~! I was so lonely! But, I did my work as family head! You should praise me for this!”

I gently stroked the head of my wife who flew into my arms as soon as I got out of the carriage.

“Just what I’d expect of you, Malida-sama. I must give you a proper reward for the work you did.”

“Yep, that’s right! I’d like to have a reward!”

I urged Luminas, who was waiting behind me, to step forward.

“Wah! This girl…! She’s the cute daughter of Warid! Is it okay for me to smell her?”

“Yes, feel free to do so. Her father and she herself have agreed to it.”

Malida embraced Luminas’s small body, brought her face close, and started to smell her.

“You smell nice. Your name was Luminas, wasn’t it?”

“Yes.”

Malida’s way of using her hands as she touched Luminas’s body while smelling her was shady.

Even though I haven’t touched Luminas yet…ah, she’s extending a hand for the tail! How unfair, Malida!

“Luminas, you’ve got a fairly trained body. With this much training, you’ll be perfect as a guard to protect my bedroom. Albert, you think so as well, don’t you?”

Malida sought my agreement.

Malida-san, it’s plain as day that you’re planning to do pervy stuff with Luminas! Well, I won’t refuse it though since I’ll explain the promise between Malida and me while we’re at it.

“If you’ve taken a liking to Luminas, I think it will be alright to have her take care of the guard protocol in the castle while she is here.”

“Okay, then I order you, Luminas, to be in charge of the guards. I’d like you to stay by my side.”

“Yes! I have heard about your character from Albert-sama. I will do my very best as long as it is something I can handle.”

Luminas has apparently received lessons in regards to the sexual activities between men and women from her father, but she had told me that she personally never experienced it so far. I think it’ll be tough in various ways if Malida and I become her first partners, but I’m sure she’ll be able to endure it all the ways, seeing how excellent she is as a spy.

“Very well, the day has grown dark by now. I believe you two are exhausted as well, so let us head to the bedroom. My lovers have been eagerly awaiting your return as well, Albert. Haah haah.”

Unable to hold back any longer as she wanted to get a good taste of Luminas, Malida started to breath roughly while urging us to her bedroom.

“Okay, let’s go then.”

“Y-Yes.”

Following Malida, we headed towards the bedroom located deep inside our private chambers.

“Welcome back, Albert-sama.”

Once we entered the bedroom, Lichere greeted us. Her, Liese, and Irena welcomed us while wearing new lewd underwear. It looks like Lichere got a new stock.

However, those outfits were too strong a stimulus for me who had continued an abstinent life for a long period of time. The outfits kept the blatant exposure of skin to a limit, but because they were made out of see-through fabric, I ended up seeing all kinds of things.

“Malida-sama has been very lonely as well, but the same applies to us as well.”

“It was also quite challenging to be Malida-ane-sama’s partner, you know? Albert, you should take responsibility for this.”

Because the girls had become the target of Malida’s sexual desires, they now looked somewhat tired after having worked hard for the last two months. As her husband I must reward them properly for their efforts.

“I will gladly reward you as much as you want. But before that, we have gained a new friend, so she needs to have her clothes changed first.”

Everyone’s eyes focused on Luminas who was held by Malida.

“She’s the daughter of Warid-san from the other day, right?”

“Is it okay for us to also play around with her tail and ears?”

“What a cute girl, Malida-ane-sama.”

“Everybody seems quite interested in Luminas. The same applies to me.”

Luminas slipped out of Malida’s carry, stood up straight on the floor, and then bowed towards everyone. The other women revealed shady smiles after seeing her act like that.

I’m pretty sure their guidance will be pretty tough…
