Chapter 3 – Confirming All Sorts of Things

We were kinda transferred to an uninhabited island. The silver lining is that Chiyu is with me, but what should we do from here on?
“Sou-kun…”
Chiyu’s expression hasn’t changed from usual, but she must be quite anxious. It’s only normal for an ordinary high school student to get panicked when they’re suddenly whisked away to some unknown place.
Even I’m merely trying my hardest to remain calm, and might have succumbed to panic if not for Chiyu’s presence.
“It’s fine, Chiyu. No matter what happens, I’ll――――”
“Has the whole class been transferred?”
This caused me to lose my drive to such a degree that I might have exaggeratedly fallen over if this had been a variety show.
“Yep. In the end, Chiyu will always act like Chiyu, I suppose.”
I can’t even begin to imagine my childhood friend succumbing to panic.
Just when I thought so, Chiyu firmly clasped my hand, which she had been holding since earlier.
“Wrong. I’m scared too. It’s great that you’re with me, Sou-kun.”
“…Yeah, we’ll somehow overcome this situation with the two of us.”
“Mmh, for starters, grasping information.”
“Right.”
Alright, first, let’s check what we’ve got on hand.
This was over in an instant. We only had on our school uniform and indoor shoes. The insides of our pockets were empty. Just as we didn’t have our school bags, we also had no smartphones.
Next, we roughly explored our surroundings. Since it was dangerous to step inside a forest when stranded, we avoided doing that. We had been transferred onto a sandy beach and no other islands were visible anywhere. There was one sun, an azure sky, and white clouds.
If there had been two or more suns, it’d have become a clincher for this being a different world or planet, but this method to check fell through.
We didn’t encounter any other humans, but although it’s just an assumption, I think our classmates have been transferred too.
“It’s also possible that this island isn’t uninhabited to begin with.”
“It’s good to hope. But, it’s probably uninhabited.”
“No, well, I think so as well.”
That hadn’t been a dream. We were sent to an uninhabited island just like that after answering the question written on the blackboard.
Of course, it’s possible to display some sort of cliche agitation to this while obstinately believing that it’s a dream or suspecting it to be a TV recording or kidnapping.
But Chiyu and I are grounded, modern kids who are used to isekai manga. We have accepted this situation due to the aspects that are different from TV pranks or abductions.
The reason for it is very simple: we can use our abilities.
It happened just a little ago while exploring the beach. A pebble entered my slipper, and because I stepped on it at a bad angle, I injured my foot. When I took off my slippers and socks, blood was oozing out of the cut.
“『Healing Magic』――Elementary Healing”
The instant Chiyu said this, a light engulfed my wound, and it healed up in the blink of an eye.
“Eh!? Chiyu, that just now….”
“Mmh, the mysterious blackboard properly gave me my power.”
“Amazing…!”
“You make me blush. How about yours, Sou-kun?”
Given that Chiyu called the being, which had sent us on this island, a mysterious blackboard, I imitated her, but either way, it apparently granted us the powers we chose. It’s a bit hard to believe this right off the bat, but there’s no point in denying something that happens right in front of your eyes.
“I see! Err, how do I use the 『Crafting Ability』?”
The second I focused on my ability, a manual on how to use it streamed through my mind.
――『Crafting Ability』
――Allows to 『Itemize』 『Objects』 that were separated from the ground
――『Items』 can be stored in 『Inventory』 and then get placed in a location of your choice.
――『Items』 inside 『Inventory』 are available for 『Crafting』
――Refer to 『Recipes』 for items that can be used for 『Crafting』
――You will need to search yourself to increase the number of 『Recipes』
“S-Somehow there’s a lot of tech-lingo mixed in there.”
Same as the brief explanations you get in games, I couldn’t remember all of it right away. That’s why I decided to learn by doing, just as I handled it in games.
“I see. I got the gist of it.”
In short, you can’t take seawater out of the 『Ocean』 because the ocean is connected to the ground. It’s the same with water you scooped up. As it’s going to quickly spill over from your hand, it’s not considered to be separated from the ground.
When I tried to use a shell as a container, 『Itemize』 apparently succeeded as the shell quickly disappeared. The storage called 『Inventory』 is what you’d call an item box in a game.
When I called it up inside my mind, a game-like screen appeared in my visual field, showing me 『Shell (small) x 1』 and 『Ocean water (tiny amount) x 1』.
They entered the 『Inventory』 together, but they’re apparently categorized as different items. However, as long as I’ve itemized something, I can take it out as single items later on, like for example 『Ocean water (tiny amount) x 1』.
The recipes were displayed in the shape of products and their raw materials. The recipes currently available to me were 『Lime』, 『Soap』, 『Salt』, 『Spear』, 『Stone Knife』, 『Stone Ax』, 『Wooden Container』, 『Wooden Cutlery』, and so on. It wasn’t much. It looks like it’s not just decided based on the stuff I itemized.
Lime and soap appear to have been created because I obtained a shell. Salt probably comes from ocean water. Wood…since I faced the forest many times, I’ve gotten a good look at trees. The same applies to stones.
As for the spear, its raw materials are wood, stone, and ivy, according to the recipe. In other words――
“The recipes will increase if I’m in a situation where I can itemize the materials?”
Or to be more precise, it’s fine as long as I find the materials? Having said that, this doesn’t seem to be the sole deciding factor either. Among the items composing the recipes, half have to be found or might have another condition. Maybe there are also recipes you only get by leveling or the number of creations, like in games? Or perhaps you cannot obtain them without clearing a specific quest…?
No, wait, it’s a bad idea to rely on my knowledge from games and isekai manga too much. Given that books written by people who were transferred to an uninhabited island haven’t been on sale, referring to reality is the only viable option.
For the time being, I’ll try to make 『 salt 』.
――『Salt (tiny amount)』 crafted.
――Obtained 『Water (tiny amount)』 in addition
This was shown in my field of vision.
“Ooohh…!”
“You managed to craft something?”
“I did. I totally did.”
I see. This is convenient.
I ended up easily securing the most important item when stranded ―― drinking water.
Apart from that…I materialized the 『Salt (tiny amount)』 on my palm. Several salt grains appeared on my palm.
“…Salt?”
Probably unable to see it well, Chiyu was puzzled.
“Yep, salt. But, I suppose that’s nothing to write home about anyway.”
“Not true. If you can use a 『Crafting Ability』, it’s extremely convenient.”
“I chose it because it’d be handy to begin with.”
It’s an ability so good that it’s fine to say that you should always get it in games where you’re supposed to survive on an uninhabited island. Well, inside a game it’s not treated as crafting ability, but your avatar’s creation skill or some such. 1
“First, you secure water at times like this?”
“As for that, it seems my ability can handle it.”
“…Don’t tell me, you’ve separated the 『Salt』 and 『Water』 in ocean water?”
Her voice lacked inflections, but because I’ve known her for so many years, I could tell from it that she was surprised.
“Aye. You can also see the details of an item, and it says there it’s drinkable water.”
“…For it to also remove the impurities for you, how expected of that ability.”
“Right!?”
“Also, what happened to everything else besides sodium chloride?”
“Hmm?”
“…What you commonly call 『Bittern』.”
“Ah, you’re right! …But, it’s not being shown…”
Maybe there’s some reason for this? There are still a lot of mysteries left.
