In reply to xias1. The tree curse was probably something done by a previous Demon King, Agathion sneakily probably gave that curse to Hifumi in his last seconds. (Remember that the liquid turned to sand and Agathion was pretty much magic living sand with a heart?)

The only way to “win” against Hifumi is probably using that tree in the elven forest.
Hifumi got his left hand affected by that tree’s unknown substance without realizing it at first before the effects already became visible.
This means that Hifumi cannot detect that unknown saubstance in the air, water or food.
And hence that is the only known way with a chance to kill him by feeding him food with traces of that tree’s parts.

The heck, his left hand that have been curse and presumably cut off is now a lethal weapon. Dang that’s awesome and this fake proof that the monster enemy is an assassin from the new demon king would ignite war of his people and to everyone, finally desiring his goal of a bloodbath world.
