It’s not like Kurt wasn’t inteligent, but Wendelin received orders to taunt and disturb Kurt on purpose. What central govern wanted the most was exactly for Kurt to lose his mind and give them a justification to put Wendelin in his place. They even dispached the royal mage to protect him, knowing that some assassination plot was going to happen
