Religion as a concept might have been about love, common decency and faith but just like how communism as a concept is about equality and everyone helping each other, it fails dismally in real life. All conflicts can basically be simplified down to the concept of you =/= me. Whether the conflict is over someone’s social status, skin color, gender, nationality, beliefs or anything else the core problem is that the other side is not your side. Religion does nothing then increasing the differences between others while strengthening the bonds of those on the same side.

Of course, in theory if everyone in the world became devout believers in one religion then there would be a lack of others and humanity would have a fairly strong cohesion (assuming no offshoots of the religion shows up) but at the same time, the difficulty of achieving that would require brainwashing on a global level.

As far as religion stands currently though, it’s nothing more than another way of humans to differentiate between us and them which only increases the number of pointless conflicts. Not to mention the countless people who use it as a tool to sway the masses.
